To Infinity & Beyond!

Monday, May 23rd, 2011

I love baking for friends, but even more so, I love baking for family.

Our son recently turned three, and his request was for a Toy Story themed cake.

I had so much fun putting this together for him.

The bottom layer was chocolate with raspberry filling and the top was vanilla with buttercream.

And he absolutely loved it.

We also had vanilla cupcakes.

As a special thanks, Buzz Lightyear themed cookies were sent home as favors.

Happy birthday to our little guy!

Bouquets of Birthday Wishes

Monday, April 4th, 2011

I love birthdays.

Especially when they bring beautiful cakes.

The birthday gal loves gardening, especially pink and purple flowers, and so I put together this delicious floral delight.

The cake is carrot, filled with yummy cream cheese frosting.

Fondant details include seed packets, terra cotta flower pots full of pink and purple blooms, and gardening gloves. There was even a little birdhouse. All was accented with buttercream grass and flowers.

Hope it was a wonderful birthday!

Happy Birthday, Olivia!

Monday, February 28th, 2011

This birthday cake was probably one of my favorites to make – it was for a very special little girl.

Two layers (vanilla and chocolate), covered in buttercream and a full size Olivia cut from fondant, all ready for the party.

She is surrounded by polka dots, stripes and she even has the sweetest fondant bows on her ears.

And of course, the first birthday smash cake, in matching colors and accents.

Happy birthday!

Start your engines!

Van’s first birthday fell on a momentous weekend: the Daytona 500.

Not only is that one of the premier Nascar races, but Van was born exactly 8 years after his parents met at that very race.

It’s not surprising that his first birthday theme was the checkered flag.

I put together this towering red velvet cake, with buttercream and black fondant checkers. So cool.

Of course, the vanilla smash cake matched…

And there were some cupcakes with red papers and black fondant stars atop swirls of buttercream.

We hope this first birthday party was special for Van and his family!

Paint Your Own

Monday, January 10th, 2011

This past weekend, a friend hosted a birthday party for her child at a local paint-your-own pottery store.

It was a brilliant idea and all the little kids had so much fun. Including my own.

She asked if I could help her out with favors – she wanted little cookies in the shape of paint palettes, customized for each little guest. I wasn’t able to find a good cutter for the job, so I opted to hand cut these babies instead.

And then tied them up with little bows.

It was a fabulous party for a fabulous little girl! Thanks so much for having us!

This little ladybug

Sunday, November 7th, 2010

I love themed parties, and I was so excited to make the cake for little Chloe’s very first birthday party.

In a ladybug theme of course.

There was a big cake.

And a smash cake.

And they couldn’t be cuter.

Happy birthday!

Sew… happy birthday to you!

Wednesday, September 8th, 2010

I made this cake for our wonderful vet’s wife’s birthday.

Dr. R told me  she really liked sewing and embroidery, and he had already surprised her with a cake in the shape of a sewing machine (how cool is that!).

So I took on the “embroidery” theme.

Which was pretty fun, seeing as how I used to love doing counted cross stitch. Which is kind of the same thing.

I covered a round, chocolate cake with fondant “fabric” (Aida, if you want to be all technical), draping it from a fondant embroidery hoop.

I then piped on the birthday message in a blocky, “sampler”esque font.

And added a few skeins of fondant and royal icing embroidery floss to the side for good measure.

Here’s hoping it was a wonderful birthday!

Gators by request

Tuesday, August 10th, 2010

If you know anything about me,  you know that I would only make a Gators cake if it really meant something to someone else.

Because I’m all about the Hurricanes, baby.

But my friend wanted something special for her husband’s birthday party. And he’s a Gators fan. So I created this football field cake with a fondant Gators logo for the event.

Two layers of devil’s food cake with a white chocolate filling, covered in smooth vanilla buttercream.

Chomp.

Happy birthday!

A Birthday Carnival

Sunday, May 2nd, 2010

Part of the fun of baking is getting to make the cakes for family birthdays.

It’s even more exciting when it’s for our son.

A’s second birthday was a carnival theme, complete with balloons, games and mini corn dogs.

I made a little 6″ carnival tent cake.

And lots and lots of cute vanilla and chocolate cupcakes to share.

Oh, and don’t forget a bunch of “2″ frosted cookies. My personal favorite!

Happy birthday to our little man! He had a wonderful day!
